On Thursday, May 24, 2012 the Williams Police Department hosted its annual Williams Bicycle Rodeo at Williams Elementary School where twenty, second and third grade students were the lucky recipients of new bicycles.
The two-day event is part of a cooperative bicycle safety education program between the Williams Police Department and Williams Elementary.
One Hundred Seven riders from the second and third grades actually competed in the rodeo. All second and third grade students, nearly two hundred in all, received bicycle safety instruction flyers, pencils and new bicycle helmets.
The bicycle rodeo was developed to give the police department an opportunity to educate the students in bicycle safety, and the rules of the road. Emphasis was given on the importance of wearing a bicycle helmet
After each student received a bicycle safety check from the Williams Police Department, the students participated in a “rodeo”. Events included a circle ride, code weave, slowest ride (balance), straightest ride (control) and maneuvering an intersection (signaling, stopping, and looking both directions).
The students were scored, and one boy, and one girl from each grade who received the highest points would receive a new bicycle. The 2012 Williams Bicycle Rodeo second grade winners are: Oscar Mendoza, and Nina Lorenzen; the third grade winners are: Daniel Ruiz, and Manuela Alejandra Sierra Ramirez.
Additionally, sixteen students from the second and third grades received bicycles as part of a randomized drawing. Those winners were: Martha Chavez, Lupita Martinez, Lucia Tapia, Johanna Jauregui, Vanessa Hernandez, Omar Lomeli, Alejandra Bautista, Bryan Ocegueda, Mia Bautista, Sonia Soto, Martin Sandoval, Anthony Lopez, Diego Garcia, Eduardo Tapia, Leo Ramirez, and Ricardo Huerta.
The Williams Police Department 2012 Bicycle Rodeo was made possible by the cooperative effors of its Police Officers, Elementary School Staff and local businesses who donated to this year’s bicycle rodeo. Those donors included: Colusa Casino Resort, The Morning Star Packing Co., Vann Brothers, Colusa County Farm Supply, Sanders’ Heavy Towing, Quality Inn, Williams Liquor & Food, Roy’s Supermarket, Fouch & Son Pharmacy, Louis Cairo’s Inc., H&R Block, and De Pue Warehouse Co. ■
